Mixing characteristics that, at first sight, seem to be polar opposites has been one of the most effective ways to create interesting, challenging art. Giving something a bright and accessible appearance can be a smart way to draw people into an unexpected darkness. Ayame Shiroi, an illustrator well known for her usage of vivid colors, youthful fashion and spooky themes, is a good example of how to do the mix the right way, emphasizing the values of both cute and creepy. It’s just the end of the world: An interview with Warmer

One of the reasons video games have become the huge industry that they are is because they provide people with a diverse mix of quality work in different mediums, be it visual arts, programming or storytelling. Music is another form of expression that thrives in the gaming industry, especially among independent titles. The Cat Lady’s OST, an incredible mix of dark and depressing themes, was one of the most pleasant surprises of the last few years. It was through this game that I discovered Warmer, a one man project by Jesse Gunn, and the excellent music this band has produced over the years. A musician who is not afraid to try experiment, a person of strong beliefs and love for his work, Jesse was one of the people I felt that I had to invite on our blog. It’s an honor to have him here.

Pixelated Dreams & Nightmares: An Interview with Dreaming Games

One of the opinions I reached during the last half of 2014 is that RPG Maker/Indie Horror RPGs are perhaps the most interesting aspect of the modern video game industry. Perhaps it’s that I am a rookie on the genre, but most titles I have come across so far are very interesting and, despite the low budget and the small number of developers, original. Dreaming Games, a team of three people Accha (artists & producer), Trass (main composer) and Usachii (main vocalist) is among those who seem to have a promising future. They have already released titles such as Painted Heart and -the excellent, if I may say so- Dreaming Mary. Both games have gained the attention of the fandom and I really wanted to have them participate in an interview with us. Introduction

Anime published in Japan during the 1970s-80s may often seem more simplistic than modern titles, yet one can’t deny that some of the most popular anime concepts and cliches were born at that time. Tough young men fighting for justice, beautiful strong women that accompany them, supernatural enemies from other dimensions and so on. Though it’s been a long time, there are still many fans of that era all over the world paying tribute to the awesomeness of retro anime.

One of them is Mane, a Spanish artist who currently resides in Japan. She designs fanarts  of titles like Getter Robo, Saint Seiya, Devilman, Ashita no Joe and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure like only a small number of people can. It’s worth mentioning that she is among the few that make little adjustments on the original material instead of completely changing it. Thus, her work is very close to the retro feeling. That doesn’t stop her from adding her own perspective on the stories and their protagonists.

We’ve wanted to interview her for quite some time. Now, with the release of her latest doujinshi “Dynamic Fiesta Heroes”, it felt like the perfect chance to ask. Friendly, talented and full of enthusiasm, we present to you, Mane. Continue reading

Introduction

Video games. They are one of the fastest developing industries of our time, covering a vast field of different themes, satisfying the demand of a greatly diverse audience. The growth of the industry isn’t simply economical. In cultural terms, video games gain an increasingly larger amount of our time, adding new thoughts, words and interests in our daily lives.

Video game commentary, also known as “Let’s play”, is one of the gaming community’s biggest occupations. Why is that? In my opinion, it provides fans with the thing they have always wanted -the ability to experience, talk and share information about video games without any middle men.

To be honest, I am not a big fan of most playthroughs. But ManlyBadassHero, a commentator who focuses mainly on the adventure and horror genres, is among the few people whose commentary truly interests me. From ib to Alien Isolation and from The Crooked Man to Outlast, the titles that he picks up and the way he takes the viewer into the game is incredible.
