Angel Sanctuary was a manga I constantly avoided reading for many years, simply because I enjoyed teasing my bud Katan. I was afraid that if the manga actually proved to be of high quality, I would not have the heart to make fun of it. But this year, for the first time, I decided to give it a look and this way I found out that Angel Sanctuary is not simply a good manga but a masterpiece.
It is hard for me to give you a detailed description of a story that lasted for 20 volumes, one that is full of plot twists and lots of drama but I have many reasons for loving this one. The design is elegant, though a few times it proves to be a bit too detailed for my taste. The story is unique for it makes a completely different use of the Christian mythos, without the usual black-and-white approach to the characters’ ethos. The only weakness I could find was the slow progress of the main story during the first two volumes. It is after them that everything floats in the most exciting way.
In conclusion, if I had to pick a pleasant surprise for 2012, Angel Sanctuary would be the one, since it has become one of my favorite stories coming from Japan. It is worth a shot from every otaku and comic fan in general.
